2017 - My full-crazy, full-good resolutions for the new year
2017 - My full-crazy, full-good resolutions for the new year
It's human nature that we often take on way too much. And so I always have the feeling that especially at the turn of the year the good resolutions become huge with one or the other. Losing weight, becoming more athletic, a new apartment, a new love happiness, a therapy and renouncing all kinds of delicacies. Personally, I don't really have any big resolutions for 2017. Lose weight? Can, but don't have to. I'm not a smoker, so I can't make a resolution to kick the habit. And I don't need to tackle a big drug load either. You see, the big, "usual" resolutions of life have already fallen flat for me. Nevertheless, you do think about how you can optimize your everyday life in particular. Big topic this year and one of my sister's favorite words is mindfulness. And that brings us to point 1 of my top three resolutions for this year:
Resolution 1: Be mindful
To be mindful in everyday life, to live mindfully and thus perhaps also make life easier for oneself in difficult times. But what does mindfulness actually mean? According to the German Center for Mindfulness, exactly this:
"Mindfulness is a quality of human consciousness, a special form of attention. It is a clear state of consciousness that allows us to register and allow every inner and outer experience in the present moment without prejudice. As mindfulness increases, habitual automatic and unconscious reactions to present experience are reduced, leading to a high degree of situationally appropriate, authentic, and self-aware action."
In general, I think I'm already pretty good at it in a lot of ways, but of course there are always those situations where I'm not functioning properly. Then I always have to be reminded that I should, for example, first take off my coat in peace and arrive at home, before I directly record another voice message to Judith half undressed, because something is buzzing around in my head again. Also, I'm not really good at doing things one after the other. For example, when I eat, I usually don't just eat, I answer emails or make To Do lists (even if only mentally). I know I definitely have room for improvement here.
Resolution 2: Consume properly
Right now, the topic of consumption is on my mind. We all live in abundance, accumulate more and more things and sometimes don't think enough about what we really buy. My friends often call me Messi, because I can throw away almost nothing. I think: I'm just too emotional a person for the throwaway society. Every piece of furniture, every accessory or even piece of clothing reminds me of a certain story. Ugly things that I bought on my travels are still stored in the closet. I prefer not to mention here that I also hoard various band T-shirts from the 90s in all drawers. But that's not the point here. It is rather about the fact that I would like to buy consciously and more qualitative things.
I always catch myself just buying something in a hurry. Just the other day, another lamp broke on me and my first thought was: oh, it's just from a Swedish furniture store, it's not all that bad. But actually I would like that I find it very bad when something is broken. Because my heart should just hang on every piece of furniture. Of course, I don't want to break out in crying fits now because a lamp gives up its ghost, but it should be that this lamp is something special for me. That's why I'm in favor of 2017 being a year of conscious consumption.
Resolution 3: What is good should stay good
I think it's such a shame that everything is always about the things that should change. Rather, one should reflect on what one is doing right. There's just so much going right in my life and I can't forget that. We're so incredibly privileged in Germany, we don't have to worry about our lives and we're allowed to live as we want to as far as possible. We should keep telling ourselves that. And with that everything is actually said.
