Papier-mâché with a difference - Dutch design duo Studio Job formed an entire cabinet series out of it for Moooi From the outside, the cabinet series by Dutch design studio Studio Job gives the appearance of classic furniture, but on closer inspection it surprises with an unusual materiality. Because instead of wood, it is made of a material that most have probably seen for the last time in the craft lesson in kindergarten: papier-mâché. The advantage here is obvious: for one thing, the designs are just as resilient and stable as furniture made of wood, but have a significantly lower dead weight. This aspect proves to be extremely practical, especially when moving house. The two designers have already worked with the material from their childhood days in their earlier designs, always shifting the scales and proportions. Thus, also in their cabinet series, the details are slightly enlarged, so that everything is a little reminiscent of furniture from the dollhouse. In addition to the

The industrial designer explains the art of virtual staging

The industrial designer explains the art of virtual staging Arndt Johannes studied industrial design at the University of Wuppertal. Since 1997 he has been running the brand and design agency Vistapark. In 2016, he founded another company, sooii, which he manages. Here, the focus is on the virtual staging of images. In high-end quality for premium brands from the design industry such as Vitra or Interlübke. A technique that enables product marketing to have high-quality image material for cross-media communication quickly and at an early stage. Virtual content production - hype or relevant reality? We met Arndt Johannes for a real conversation in Wuppertal. When do we need CGIs today? The biggest advantage of virtual image production is flexibility. The multi-layered media landscape that manufacturers have to cover today no longer works with conventional product photography. It's increasingly about moving images, technologies like VR and AR. In the wake of digitization, you hav

The most beautiful innovations of the Light Show, small concerns and big questions.

The most beautiful innovations of the Light Show, small concerns and big questions. Tentatively poetic by day, powerfully sublime in the evening. A large number of the innovations at this year's Light + Building are elegant, almost royal, one might think. Here are the highlights of the new luminaire design. There is a mood of progress in the air, gone are the days of uncertainty. While quite a few manufacturers were noticeably awkward on the subject of LEDs just a few years ago, they are achieving a common goal during this year's lighting fair in Frankfurt: to transform the luminaire from a decorative lighting instrument into an impressive medium for an indispensable element - light. At the same time, light does not simply remain light - the luminaires must shine even when they are switched off. Contemporary luminaire design wants either to set accents or to be emphatically restrained. Or as designer Arik Levy puts it at the Vibia booth, "The question is how we link arc

Petter Neby, founder of Punkt, in conversation.

Petter Neby, founder of Punkt, in conversation. In the past, everything was simpler: everyday objects had to be functional first and foremost. Other design aspects were secondary. Today, things are more complicated, because legitimizing design purely from functionality is no longer in keeping with the times. The relationship of the user to the object has come into view. Emotionality is no longer merely tolerated, but becomes a weighty factor in design. Thus a new field of tension is formed, which Petter Neby, founder of the Lugano-based company Punkt, serves with his products in the field of Consumer Electronics . A conversation with Neby about the loss of European manufacturing facilities, mistakes made by Braun and the search for simplicity and emotionality. Mr. Neby, why do you have Salone in Milan. Then, when I started with Punkt in 2007, I emailed Jasper and told him about my plans for the company. He replied after three days, "Congratulations, let's do it." Jas

Visiting Eike König

Visiting Eike König Eike, we visited you in your agency Hort und Zuhause in Berlin-Kreuzberg. With the name "Hort" alone, we immediately associate something secure and communal. How can we imagine a day in your everyday life? That was also my intention back then, in 1994. Surrounded by self-organized after-school programs in Frankfurt's Nordend, it was time to design an after-school program for creative grown-up kids, positioning itself as a shelter and laboratory space between the university and the cold business world. My everyday life itself has of course changed after 24 years. What was also thought of and lived as a social space in the beginning is no longer needed in the same form today, due to the structure of our very self-determined collaboration as a collective. Therefore, it also needs a rethinking of how it is used. I am considering, because my girlfriend Anne and I are about to have children, to divide the space into living and studio space. I have never r

Tony Korody / Getty Images Mr. Giugiaro, all you have to do is leave the house and you'll encounter many of the vehicles you designed. How does that feel? Well, I have designed more than 500 cars, implemented about 300 of them. It usually takes three years from design to production. When the car is finally on the road, I tend to analyze it critically rather than enjoying it. You always think: I could have done something better. You originally wanted to be a painter. How did you get into vehicle design? When I was painting in school, my teacher sai

Portuguese cork meets pencil references in this side plate.

Portuguese cork meets pencil references in this side plate . A table, it has six corners . Pencils have a hexagonal cross-section - so they fit well in the hand and do not roll off the table. Luis Nascimento transfers this shape to a side table and scales Pencil by several factors in size. The fact that the table nevertheless does not become a heavyweight is due to the material: Nascimento developed the collection, which also includes Pencil , in collaboration with the Portuguese cork specialist Sofalca. The small seating furniture is made of a dark, smoked version; a second version is faced with light cork on the six cut sides, and the contrast emphasizes the design. With a height of 40, 50, or 60 centimeters, the product family consists of three tables that - should they ever fall over - will land safely on one of their sides. tp How To Use Green For Your Houses Exterior

How an apartment becomes a home

Image
How an apartment becomes a home Today I have news from my bookshelf. Last month, a new book on living was added: "Wie eine Wohnung ein Zuhause wird" by Stefanie Luxat, who is not only a successful lifestyle blogger, but, as the former head of the living and creative section of the magazine Brigitte, also brings a lot of experience on the subject of furnishing. Finding beautiful furniture should not be a problem for anyone. If there's no suitable store nearby, you can store conveniently online today. One finds suggestions to enough in living magazines and Blogs. But often the big disappointment follows immediately with delivery and one asks oneself: Why does not look now with me so beautifully as in the booklet? Quite simply because a beautiful sofa alone does not make a home. It simply needs a lot more. Also a dwelling needs personality and it gets only by the own style of the inhabitants. But how do you find your own style ? Many, many answers to it you g
