Queen Elizabeth II becomes first monarch to celebrate platinum jubilee
The daughter of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and Prince Albert, Duchess and Duke of York, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born in London on April 21, 1926. At birth, she was third in line to the throne after her uncle, King Edward VIII, and her father. However, when her uncle abdicated in 1936, her father, who was from then on called George VI, ascended the throne and she became his heiress. In November 1947, the future Queen married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. On February 6, 1952, her father died of lung cancer and a little later Elizabeth ascended the British throne. Her coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953 - the first ever to be televised. In 2015, she broke the record of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years.
