Street art in Milan: how Serena Confalonieri makes the city more colorful

With various artistic initiatives, the city of Milan wants to transform desolate corners into colorful places of public life. Designer Serena Confalonieri has contributed two projects at once.

Serena Confalonieri Mailand

Serena Confalonieri made her debut at Milan Design Week in 2013 with the "Flamingo Rug" for Nodus.

From glass art to graphic design - there are hardly any design disciplines that Serena Confalonieri has not yet tested and mastered. Her designs can be seen at the Salone del Mobile, in galleries like Rossana Orlandi's, and now as street art on the streets of Milan.

The project "Quadra" is based on an educational and at the same time playful concept: the graphic subdivision of the surface by a grid is reminiscent of the leaves of a notebook - hence the title.

The metropolis in Lombardy, northern Italy, wants to revitalize dead urban areas. Programs for these upgrades have already been in place since 2018, including the "Piazze Aperte" initiative. Confalonieri created such a neighborhood meeting place in the Quarto Oggiaro district in May 2021: 600 square meters of concrete became a colorful urban oasis. Chess and Twister games are now drawn on the former parking lot. The "Quadra" project is completed by a community vegetable garden.

Street Art School: the former parking lot was painted in collaboration with volunteers from the Milan association WAU! and the students of the adjacent I.C.S. Via Val Lagarina.

Confalonieri's second stroke followed in July. In several Milanese neighborhoods, artists are currently creating urban artworks that visualize each neighborhood's identity. For the initiative "Un nome in ogni quartiere" ("A name in every neighborhood"), the designer created a mural in the northeast of the city - on the facade of the Italian association for blood donations. The painting is intended to raise awareness of the issue and reflect the lively atmosphere of the area. Nice side effect: the work "Città Studi" transforms the rather dull street into an Instagram-worthy spot.

Through the campaign "Un nome in ogni quartiere", various Milanese neighborhoods are to be rediscovered and enhanced.
