Like your favorite read, the ideal place to read is a very personal thing - but there are a few basic types nonetheless. The best, because healthiest lighting for reading is and remains daylight. On this extended windowsill of a Berlin children's room, the first reader is enthroned in the treetops. White leached maritime pine makes the wooden recess invitingly bright and, combined with the eucalyptus green curtain, looks calm and uncluttered. To ensure that an alcove like this example from Studio Karhard delivers on its promise, please keep the following details in mind: The mattress should be recessed at least a hand's width into the base to prevent it from slipping. For the curtain we recommend opaque fabric, so when closed it provides cozy shielding from the room. Against direct sunlight, the designers have chosen plain white cotton in front of the panes. Do not forget with such a high window place for children: Be sure to use a lockable window handle!

2. the poetry of geometry as inspiration for the reading table

Book tip: Tanizaki Jun'ichiro's cult essay "In Praise of Shadow," Manesse. The book is available here, at 15 euros.
